About the Music: The Dance of the Seven Chakras

As an acupuncturist, I am asked questions such as:

  • What is energy?
  • Does the human body have specific areas that have varying levels of energy?
  • What are ways to potentially influence these energy centers in a positive way?

The Dance of the Seven Chakras is my interpretation of palettes of sound that hopefully will have a positive energetic effect on each of the seven chakras and the entire body . The chakras of the body are wheels of energy that are rotating, cycling and breathing. In the introduction to the CD section, the seven individual chakras are discussed, so I will not review that information here. What is important is that each chakra, because of its anatomic position in the body and relationship to organs and other tissues, has a unique energetic signature.

Music, chords, notes and percussive rhythms also have energetic signatures. There is also an impact that music has on our senses. When we hear music we might tap our feet, hum, or even turn the music off. The music affects us.

The creative process in selecting the musical interpretation for this CD was very intriguing and fun for me. What sounds and textures best express each chakra? Fortunately, because of my extensive traveling, I had amassed a large collection of indigenous chants, environmental sounds and textures. These international sounds are woven into the musical fabric of this CD.

For example, sounds of the rainforest in Chiapas, birds from the Machu Picchu region, Tibetan sacred chants, a Lacandon Indian 'throat' singer and seven metal bowls played in a cave in the Himalayas are all woven into this CD.

When the fourth chakra had its' turn for interpretation, I thought about what sound(s) best expressed the heart, love and unconditional bliss? What came up was the love and innocence that is experienced when a young child and opens up a music box. Those beautiful, sweet sounds chiming forth, and perhaps the visual of a ballerina spinning around slowly. To me, that is the energy of the heart chakra.

The fifth chakra captures Jorge Kin of the Lacandon Indians. He is literally sitting on a tree trunk while he is chanting about sitting on a tree stump. He is singing in his specialized way from his throat, and singing about sitting on a tree stump, as the rainforest in that area has literally been cut down to only tree stumps. Bring this wonderful throat singing technique into your throat chakra and reclaim your expression and personal "forest."

The seventh chakra was also particularly interesting. What would the sound be of the seventh, or crown chakra? For this interpretation I had the "perfect" soundscape, a recording that I made in a cave in the Himalayas. Late one night several people in my group, and myself, went into a famous cave where Monks and Lamas pilgrimage to hopefully receive a "celestial tear drop." From the roof of the cave "celestial teardrops" drip periodically. To receive a drop in one's open mouth may grant the recipient a moment to unlimited lifetimes of blessings.

We played our seven metal bowls in the cave, while bats danced and swooped around. The recording of that night is the backdrop for the seventh chakra.

When you listen to and interact with this CD, what comes up for you and what do you feel in and on your chakras?

Please email me you interpretations and sensations.
I would love to know about them.
